Virtual reality has been present for a long time in several science fiction films, games and series, such as in the film The Passenger from the Future from 1992 where a scientist uses reality virtual way to treat a patient and education is one way of using technology.

With the development of low-cost solutions such as Google Cardbox, the use of virtual reality has become more accessible, facilitating implementation in schools and courses. Today we have several examples of schools, mainly private ones, that use technology.

Google Cardbox

The Google Cardbox and similar solutions like the VR Box use a cardboard or plastic glasses frame and a smartphone. The Smartphone runs an application or video and generates images prepared for display on the glasses, receiving information from its sensors to generate user interaction with the virtual environment.

This way we can use any smartphone with compatible technology (there are many) adding a new function to this device that is increasingly present in our daily lives.

It is possible to have the experience of being in places such as museums, historical sites, being surrounded by 3D videos and playing within a virtual world. There are several possibilities such as:

  • Get to know historical places and moments: How about seeing pyramids with their mummies, going through outer space or taking a ride on Mount Everest?

  • **Learn languages: **Learning English for example can be more efficient if you are in the United States and using VR it is possible to have the experience of entering a simulation with characters speaking with an American accent in addition to using auxiliary tools according to each APP. An example App for language courses is Virtualspeech, which has several learning tool options and diverse content for VR.

  • **Study the human body in 3D **With applications like Google Expeditions it is possible to see the human body in 3D with great detail and even study microorganisms such as bacteria.

  • **Training speeches and lectures: **Public speaking is a challenge for many people and with the use of virtual environments it is possible to train speaking in tense and stressful environments.

Available types of virtual reality glasses:

We basically have 2 types of VR glasses: Low-cost glasses that depend on a smartphone and advanced glasses.

Low-cost glasses with smartphone:Link to this heading

These are glasses that use your smartphone to run applications, generally more economical, costing less than R$100.00 and some have a controller. As examples we have Google Cardbox, VR Box and Xiaomi VR

Advanced VR Glasses (Virtual Reality Headset):Link to this heading

These are glasses that have all the technology integrated, they have a better wearing experience with more functional and advanced controls. Some examples are: Rift Glasses and Asus Windows Mixed Reality Headset.

Use case:Link to this heading

In 2019 we started offering workshop services and courses with Virtual Reality for different audiences, one of our clients, the project Escolas Criativas purchased several VR Glasses of the VR Box 2.0 model and Smartphones for schools in Niteroi where we are running some workshops showing the practical uses of this technology in elementary education with great feedback from teachers.
